First Listen Reviews:
"Bass extension on the Bambusa monitors was powerful and quick moving. Most enjoyable was the upper bass notes which seemed crisp and sharp to the ear. Good for upright bass, which was part of the samplings we listened to." part-time audiophile - Eric Franklin Shook - CAF 2019 Coverage
The Bambusa MG 1 delivers a unique sound. At first listen they seem polite yet when you listen to a complex orchestrations detail is exceptional. They march an interesting line where they are neither bright nor warm, offer superb detail but are not fatiguing. A wonderful speaker for all music but exceptional for Jazz, Blues or Classical or really any music where detail is critical but there is concern about fatigue.
The Silver Reference upgrade gives you more of everything good about this speaker. It reduces the politeness a hair and maximizes nuance and detail yet remains non-fatiguing.
Best with "neutralish" amps ranging from higher powered KT88/6550 tubes through slightly forward SS amps. Brilliant with the Musical Fidelity M6s PRX.
Cabinet - The Bambusa cabinet is made from "solid bamboo." You are probably wondering why "solid bamboo" is in quotes. This is because the bamboo panels we use are laminated, but are slats of bamboo that are laminated together into a solid wood plank.
These planks are outstanding for production of a speaker cabinet. A cabinet material for a speaker needs a few properties to perform well. Strength, rigidity, humidity resistance and a uniform density are most important. Bamboo offers all of these and is sustainable to boot.
- 29% stronger than red oak
- Lamination and machining ensures consistent density
- Strength is maximised with the panels laminated on their side
- Bamboo is a grass rather than a wood making it naturally water resistant - expands and contract as little as plywood
Why is bamboo sustainable: The fastest growing "tree" on earth, bamboo is actually a grass with wood characteristics. Grows in shoots up to 90 feet tall, but just a few inches in diameter. Harvesting bamboo does not require replanting. Regeneration occurs from the existing root structure which helps prevent soil erosion. There is no need to use pesticides or fertilizers and bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of hardwood.
Drivers: For the Bambusa MG we have opted for SEAS Excel drivers for several reasons. The "Millenium" tweeter is a soft fabric dome made from Sonotex with a unique magnet system. It is higher mass and extremely well damped to ensure stray cabinet vibrations have a minimal impact on the sound profile.
The Excel mid-woofer features a magnesium driver. These cones feature extremely high stiffness along with good internal damping. SEAS Excel Magnesium cone drivers are world renowned for their high definition, low distortion and sound reproduction.
These drivers combine together for an extremely natural sound with deep bass, excellent frequency extension and deep and engaging soundstage.
Crossover: Like our other products, we work with a master designer who tailored our crossovers to the explicit cabinets and drivers. Our motivation is always to deliver the most natural and revealing sound possible. This extends to our choice of parts using Clarity Cap CSA Capacitors, Goertz Copper Foil and Solen Perfect Lay Inductors in different parts of our crossover to optimize performance.
Kimber Kable and WBT: We use only Kimber Kable for our internal point to point wiring and WBT binding posts. This ensures that the signal you deliver to these speakers will reach the driver and crossovers in the purest possible way.
Silver reference includes Kimber Kable Silver wire for point to point wiring, Silver WBT binding posts and Mundorf Silver-Gold Oil Capacitor on the tweeter.
Specifications: TBD - Speakers will be sent to Excelsior Audio for independent 3rd Party measurement.
